Botak Jones is introduced and recommended by one of our blog reader by the nick of "Laykwan". He commented that Botak Jones served fantastic american food, and requested us to visit the Ang Mo Kio Branch. Thanks for introducing makan places to us :)
As Ang Mo Kio is a bit too far for us, we went to another branch of theirs at Clementi, which is also being featured in HDB Tai Tai show. Once we arrive, we are so shock by the huge volume of people dining and queuing for Botak Jones. Almost everyone in the kopitiam are ordering from them. One family share their table with us. They travel all the way down here from SengKang after watching the HDB Tai Tai.
There isn't much choice on their menu. So we chose their famous Chicken Gumbo soup, Chicken Cajun and Rosemary Lamb Chops. We queued for 15 mins before it's our turn to make the order. Once order is made, we waited 45 mins for the food to be served.
The portions are really huge even though we order small. And actually, the food is quite disappointing. The chicken gumbo soup looks messy and taste like MSG powder soup with "leftover" food thrown in. The Cajun chicken, though has fragrant Char-Grilled taste, it is very thick and dry. The Rosemary Lamb Chop is tender, but it don't have the kind of distinctive lamb taste which mutton lovers love. Fries are too dry. The only thing we both like is their coleslaw.
After eating this meal, we know that in the next 6 months or so, we won't be patronizing this place. Even the family sitting with us also says that they are quite sick of the food. So what's the great woo haa about this place? Overrated again??
Well, perhaps if you want affordable huge portions of American food, you might like this place, but don't put too high expectations. Again, it's up to individual preferences or the chef's mood.
